Adults playing the Christmas candy bar game around a festive holiday table with wrapped chocolate bar, oven mitts, and dice

Picture this: Your guests are laughing so hard they’re crying as someone frantically tries to cut a chocolate bar with a knife and fork while wearing oven mitts. That’s the Candy Bar Game, and it’s about to become your new favorite Christmas party game.

Also known as the chocolate game or the unwrap the candy bar game, this ridiculously fun dice game turns something simple – unwrapping candy – into an epic battle of speed, luck, and pure comedy. Trust me, watching adults struggle with basic motor skills while wearing oven mitts never gets old.

Why You’ll Love This Christmas Candy Bar Game

This game is pure chaos in the best way possible. It’s perfect for breaking the ice at holiday parties, getting everyone laughing at family gatherings, or adding some high-energy fun to your Christmas cookie exchange. The rules are simple enough to explain in 30 seconds, but the gameplay is hilarious enough to keep everyone engaged for the entire party.

Plus, you only need one oversized candy bar (not a mountain of prizes), making it budget-friendly and easy to set up. And the best part? Nobody has to eat a ton of chocolate to win – they just get to claim their hard-earned pieces at the end.

The Candy Bar Game

Get ready for one of the most hilariously absurd games you’ll ever play. This Christmas party game combines dice rolling, oven mitts, and chocolate into pure entertainment gold.

Best for: Christmas parties, family gatherings, office holiday parties, white elephant exchanges, any group that needs a good laugh

Time to Play: 20-40 minutes (depending on group size)

Players: 4-12 players (works best with 6-10)

Age Range: All ages (adults will have the most fun, but kids 8+ can definitely play)

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 oversized chocolate bar (the bigger, the better – look for giant Hershey’s bars or Toblerone)
  • Festive wrapping paper and tape (wrap that candy bar like it’s a Christmas present)
  • 2 standard dice
  • 2 oven mitts (the bulkier, the funnier)
  • 1 butter knife (nothing sharp!)
  • 1 fork
  • 1 pie plate or paper plate (for rolling the dice)
  • Small baggies for players to store their chocolate pieces (optional but helpful)

Pro Shopping Tip: Hit up your local grocery store or drugstore right after Halloween or in early December when oversized candy bars go on sale. You’ll save a bundle!

How to Play:

Setup:

1. Wrap your chocolate bar in festive wrapping paper like you’re wrapping a gift. Go crazy with the tape – the more layers, the more challenging (and hilarious) it becomes.

2. Clear a table and have everyone sit around it. Place the wrapped candy bar, oven mitts, knife, and fork in the center. Put the dice in the pie plate and place it to the side.

Gameplay:

1. Determine who goes first by having everyone roll the dice once. The person with the highest roll starts as Player A.

2. Player A puts on both oven mitts and begins frantically trying to unwrap the chocolate bar. Meanwhile, Player B (the person to Player A’s left) grabs the dice and starts rolling in the pie plate, trying to get doubles (the same number on both dice).

3. Player B keeps rolling over and over as fast as possible until they roll doubles. Player A is racing against time, ripping through that wrapping paper like it’s Christmas morning.

4. The moment Player B rolls doubles, they yell “DOUBLES!” and pass the dice to Player C (the person on their left). Player A must immediately stop, take off the oven mitts, and pass them – along with the knife and fork – to Player B.

5. Now Player B becomes the unwrapper. They put on the oven mitts and continue unwrapping (or cutting) while Player C frantically rolls for doubles. The cycle continues around the table.

6. Once the chocolate bar is fully unwrapped, the real fun begins. The person wearing the oven mitts must use the knife and fork to cut off or break off ONE PIECE AT A TIME from the chocolate bar. Any pieces they successfully break off during their turn, they get to keep in front of them.

7. Here’s the golden rule: DO NOT eat your chocolate pieces during the game! Set them aside. The person who collects the most pieces wins.

8. Play continues until every last piece of chocolate has been claimed. Count up the pieces – the player with the most chocolate is the champion!

Pro Tips:

Make it harder: Use multiple layers of wrapping paper and add ribbon, bows, or even put the wrapped candy bar inside a box first. The more obstacles, the more laughter.

Make it easier for kids: Let younger players skip the oven mitts or allow them to break off pieces by hand instead of using utensils.

Set a sharing rule: If you don’t want your guests loaded up on sugar, announce at the start that everyone must share their pieces at the end or save them for later in baggies.

Add a prize: Give the winner a small prize like a $10 gift card, a mini bottle of wine, or something funny like a toothbrush set (since they just won a bunch of chocolate!).

Play standing up: For extra chaos and energy, have everyone stand around the table instead of sitting. The urgency is even funnier.

Fun Variations for Other Occasions

Candy bar game variations for different occasions including Christmas, Halloween, and birthday parties

While this is a Christmas candy bar game classic, you can easily adapt it for other parties:

Halloween Candy Bar Game: Wrap the chocolate bar in spooky orange and black paper. Use Halloween-themed candy bars and maybe add a “trick” rule where doubles on snake eyes means the chocolate passes two people to the left instead of one.

Birthday Party Version: Wrap the candy bar in birthday-themed paper and add confetti inside the wrapping layers. You can also play with a giant birthday candy bar or the birthday person’s favorite chocolate.

Valentine’s Day Twist: Use a giant heart-shaped chocolate box instead of a candy bar. Wrap it in red or pink paper.

New Year’s Eve Game: Wrap the chocolate in gold or silver metallic paper and play at midnight – the person holding the chocolate when the clock strikes twelve wins a bonus prize.

Office Party Edition: Keep it professional by wrapping a fancy chocolate bar in neutral wrapping paper. Winner gets bragging rights and the chocolate to share with their team.

Why This Game Is a Guaranteed Hit

Group of adults laughing and playing the hilarious Christmas candy bar game at holiday party

The Candy Bar Game works because it takes something ridiculously simple and makes it hilariously difficult. Watching capable adults fumble with oven mitts while someone frantically rolls dice creates an energy that’s contagious. Everyone’s invested, everyone’s laughing, and everyone leaves with a story.

It’s also genius because it’s self-regulating – the game naturally moves quickly, keeps everyone engaged (even when it’s not your turn, you’re watching the chaos), and doesn’t require any special skills or knowledge. Just luck, speed, and the ability to laugh at yourself.

Plus, unlike some party games where only the extroverts have fun, this one works for everyone. Shy guests love it because the focus is on the game, not on them performing or answering personal questions.

Quick FAQs

What if someone rolls doubles immediately?

That’s the game! Some rounds last 30 seconds, some last 3 minutes. That’s what makes it unpredictable and fun.

Can we use two candy bars?

Sure! If you have a huge group (12+ people), consider using two setups at different tables to keep the energy high and the wait times short.

What if the chocolate melts?

Pop it in the fridge before the party. If it’s a warm room, you can also keep backup chocolate in the fridge and swap it out between rounds.

Do we have to use oven mitts?

The oven mitts are what make it hilarious, but if you don’t have them, you can use winter gloves, boxing gloves, or even have players use just one hand tied behind their back.

With this Candy Bar Game in your party planning arsenal, you’re guaranteed a room full of laughter and a night everyone will remember. It’s the kind of simple, ridiculous fun that makes holiday parties legendary. So grab that oversized chocolate bar, wrap it up, and get ready for some seriously chaotic Christmas party fun!

Your guests will thank you. (And probably beg to play it again).
