Ingredients
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan. Whisk together until fully combined.
Heat over medium heat, stirring often, until the mixture reaches a gentle simmer.
Reduce heat slightly and continue to simmer for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened.
Remove from heat. Use immediately, or let cool completely and transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 to 5 days.
Notes
For a smokier flavor, add 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke.
For extra heat, increase the cayenne pepper or add a splash of hot sauce.
For a sweeter sauce, add more brown sugar or swap it for honey.
Apple cider vinegar can be substituted for white vinegar for a fruitier flavor.
Dark brown sugar can be used instead of light brown sugar for a richer, more molasses-forward taste.
The sauce will thicken further as it cools.
Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 5 days. Stir before using.
