Homemade BBQ Sauce

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings 6

Ingredients

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan. Whisk together until fully combined.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring often, until the mixture reaches a gentle simmer.
  • Reduce heat slightly and continue to simmer for 6 to 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce has thickened.
  • Remove from heat. Use immediately, or let cool completely and transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to 3 to 5 days.

Notes

  • For a smokier flavor, add 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke.
  • For extra heat, increase the cayenne pepper or add a splash of hot sauce.
  • For a sweeter sauce, add more brown sugar or swap it for honey.
  • Apple cider vinegar can be substituted for white vinegar for a fruitier flavor.
  • Dark brown sugar can be used instead of light brown sugar for a richer, more molasses-forward taste.
  • The sauce will thicken further as it cools.
  • Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 5 days. Stir before using.
