1. Magic Milk Heart Experiment

This one is pure visual magic. Drop some food coloring into milk, add a secret ingredient, and watch an explosion of swirling colors that’ll have your kids gasping in amazement. It’s the perfect combo of “wow factor” and zero-stress setup.

Valentine's Day magic milk heart science experiment setup with red and pink food coloring drops in heart-shaped pan with dish soap and cotton swabs for kids

Best for: Kids ages 4+, visual learners, anyone who loves instant gratification

Time to Experiment: 10-15 minutes

What You’ll Need:

Whole milk or 2% milk (the higher the fat content, the better the explosion!)

Heart-shaped cake pan (or any shallow dish – you can even use small heart-shaped cookie cutters)

Red and pink food coloring

Dish soap

Cotton swabs or cotton balls

How to Make the Magic Happen:

1. Pour a thin layer of milk into your heart-shaped pan. You don’t need much – just enough to cover the bottom.

2. Add drops of red and pink food coloring randomly across the milk. Feel free to get creative with the placement!

3. Dip a cotton swab into dish soap (or soak a cotton ball if you want a bigger reaction). Now here’s where the magic happens: gently touch the soapy swab to a drop of food coloring and watch it explode outward in swirling patterns.

4. Keep experimenting! Try touching different spots, adding more colors like purple, or using multiple soapy swabs at once to create an epic color show.

The Science Behind the Magic:

Here’s what’s really going on: milk contains tiny fat molecules, and when you add soap, those soap molecules race around trying to bond with the fat. As the soap molecules zoom through the milk hunting for fat, they push the food coloring molecules around, creating those mesmerizing swirls and explosions. Once the soap and fat are fully mixed, the movement stops. That’s why higher-fat milk creates bigger, more dramatic reactions – there’s more fat for the soap to chase!

Pro Tip: Use a white dish or pan to really make those colors pop. And if you want to extend the fun, keep adding fresh drops of food coloring and touching them with more soap for round after round of colorful explosions.

2. Skittles Heart Experiment

Want to create a rainbow heart that forms right before your eyes? This experiment is mesmerizing to watch and teaches kids about candy dyes, dissolving, and why some things mix while others stay separate. Plus, it looks absolutely stunning when it’s done.

Red and pink Skittles arranged in heart shape on white plate before adding water for Valentine science experiment for kids

Best for: Kids ages 5+, patient observers, rainbow lovers

Time to Experiment: 15-20 minutes (mostly waiting and watching)

What You’ll Need:

  • One package of Skittles
  • Warm water
  • A plate with a slightly curved center (the curve is key – it helps the colors flow to the middle!)

How to Create Your Skittles Rainbow Heart:

1. Arrange your Skittles in a heart shape around the edge of your plate. You can stick with red and pink for a classic Valentine look, or go full rainbow for an even more spectacular result. (Spoiler: we loved the rainbow version!)

2. Slowly pour warm water into the center of your heart. The trick here is to pour carefully so the water doesn’t splash beyond the Skittles – you want it pooling in the middle.

3. Now sit back and watch the magic unfold. The candy coating will start to dissolve, and streams of color will flow from each Skittle toward the center of the plate. The colors meet in the middle but don’t immediately mix – they create distinct lines of color that look like a work of art.

The Science Behind the Rainbow:

Here’s the cool part: each Skittle releases the same amount of sugar as it dissolves. Because the sugar concentration is equal from each candy, the colored dyes push toward the center at the same rate and don’t mix right away. The food dye molecules are heavier than water, so they sink and spread along the bottom of the plate, creating those beautiful defined color zones. Eventually, the colors will start to blend, but for several minutes, you’ll have a perfect rainbow heart.

Fun Variations to Try:

Cold water vs. warm water: Ask your kids to predict what will happen with cold water instead of warm. (Hint: it dissolves slower but still works!)

Different candies: Try M&Ms or other coated candies to see if they create the same effect

Sugar cube obstacles: Place sugar cubes between some of the Skittles and watch how they change the flow of color

3. Borax Crystal Hearts

This is the experiment that keeps on giving. Set it up today, and by tomorrow, you’ll have sparkling crystal hearts that look like they came straight out of a fairy tale. Kids will love checking on their crystals throughout the day to watch them slowly form – it’s like a science experiment meets treasure hunt.

Best for: Kids ages 8+ (with adult help), anyone who loves overnight surprises, future geologists

Time to Experiment: 5 minutes to set up + 24 hours to grow

What You’ll Need:

Mason jar

Borax powder (available in the laundry aisle – adults only to handle!)

Boiling water (adults only!)

Red or pink pipe cleaners

Popsicle sticks or craft sticks

Protective eyewear (for the adult handling borax)

Borax crystal heart experiment supplies including mason jar, red pipe cleaner heart, popsicle stick, and borax powder for Valentine's Day STEM activity

How to Grow Your Crystal Hearts:

1. Adults: Add 3 tablespoons of borax powder for every 1 cup of boiling water into your mason jar. Stir until all the borax dissolves completely. The water will be extremely hot, and borax should only be handled by adults. Keep it away from kids!

2. Shape a heart from a pipe cleaner. Twist another pipe cleaner onto a popsicle stick so you can suspend your heart in the solution. Make sure your heart is small enough to fit in the jar with room to spare – you’ll need space for the crystals to grow and for you to remove the heart later.

3. Hang your pipe cleaner heart in the borax solution by resting the popsicle stick across the top of the jar. The heart should be fully submerged but not touching the bottom.

4. Let it sit for 24 hours and resist the urge to move it! Check in every few hours to watch the crystals forming on the pipe cleaner. It’s incredibly cool to see the progress.

5. After 24 hours, carefully lift your crystal heart out of the jar. You might even find bonus crystals at the bottom of the jar!

The Science Behind the Sparkle:

When you mix borax with hot water, the heat makes the water molecules move super fast, which allows more borax to dissolve than normally could. As the water cools down, those molecules slow down and move closer together, leaving less room for the dissolved borax. The excess borax has nowhere to go, so it starts “falling out” of the solution and crystallizing on your pipe cleaner heart. The more time you give it, the more crystals form as they bond together layer by layer.

Pro Tip: Want an even bigger crystal heart? Try leaving it in the solution for 48 hours instead of 24. Or once your first heart is done, put it back in for another round to see if more crystals form on top!

Important Safety Reminders About Borax:

Adults only should handle borax at all times

Always read and follow product labels

Borax can be harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or if it gets in eyes

To prevent borax dust from spreading, add water to your container first, then add the borax powder

Use protective eyewear when mixing the solution

Keep borax stored safely out of reach of children
