Store-bought cards are sweet – but they don’t come with a tiny paper kid climbing a ladder to crown Dad king. This one does. This interactive, pull-string Father’s Day card is the kind of handmade gift that earns a spot on Dad’s desk for years. When he pulls the string, a little figure climbs up and places a crown right on his head. It’s adorable, it’s clever, and yes – kids absolutely lose it when they see it work for the first time.
The best part? You don’t need any fancy supplies or art skills to pull this off. If you can cut, glue, and thread a string through two holes, you’ve got this completely handled.
What You’ll Need
White cardstock – for the front panel where all the magic happens
Blue cardstock (or any color you love) – for the card base/backing
White twine or thick thread – this is your “pull mechanism,” so pick something sturdy
Scissors
Glue stick
A needle, compass point, or sharp pencil – for poking the two key holes
Double-sided foam tape – this is the secret ingredient that makes the string glide freely (don’t skip it!)
Markers – for your heartfelt message
Colored pencils or crayons – for adding color to your drawn figures
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Draw Your Characters
On white cardstock (or plain white paper), hand-draw four things: a dad figure, a small child figure, a ladder, and a tiny crown. Keep them simple – stick-figure style totally works and is charming! Cut each one out carefully.
Want to make it extra personal? Draw the dad with glasses, a favorite shirt, or his signature hairdo. Kids love customizing their figures to look just like their family.
Step 2: Set Up Your White Card Panel
Take your white cardstock and glue the Dad figure and the Ladder onto the right side of the card. Position the dad standing tall next to the ladder – leave the left half of the card blank for now. That’s where your message will go later.
Step 3: Poke Your Two Holes (The Mechanism Magic!)
This is where the interactive part comes to life. Using your needle, compass point, or sharp pencil, poke two holes through the white card:
Hole A (Top): Right at the top of the ladder – where Dad’s head is, so the crown will land perfectly when pulled up
Hole B (Bottom): At the very bottom of the ladder, straight below Hole A
Make the holes big enough for your string to pass through without friction. If the string feels tight, widen the holes a little with the tip of a pencil.
Step 4: Thread Your String
Cut a piece of string about three times the height of your card. Now thread it like this:
1. Push the string up through the bottom hole (from the back of the card to the front)
2. Pull it across the front of the card and push it back through the top hole (from front to back)
3. On the back of the card, tie the two ends together in a secure knot to form a continuous loop
When you pull the string hanging below the card, the loop on the front should travel upward. That’s exactly what we want!
Step 5: Build the Gap with Foam Tape (Super Important!)
Here’s the step that makes everything work smoothly. The string needs a small gap between the white front panel and the blue card base so it can glide up and down without getting squished flat.
Apply double-sided foam tape along all four edges on the back of your white card panel. The foam tape is thick enough to create just the right amount of clearance for the string mechanism to move freely. Regular flat tape won’t work here – the foam thickness is key.
Step 6: Attach the Moving Child and Crown
Flip the card to the front. You’ll see the loop of string running vertically up the front of the card. Now glue your child figure and your tiny crown directly onto that visible string.
Position the child so they look like they’re climbing the ladder – arms reaching up, as if scaling the rungs
Position the crown just above the child’s hands, as if they’re holding it up ready to place it on Dad
Pro Tip: Let the glue dry fully before testing the pull – you don’t want your little climber falling off on their big moment!
Step 7: Mount the Card and Write Your Message
Fold your blue cardstock in half to create your card base. Peel the backing off your foam tape and press the white panel firmly onto the front of the blue card. Make sure the pull-string hangs out from the bottom.
Now grab your marker and write your message on the left side of the white panel. The classic read: “Dad, You Are My King” – written in fun, chunky lettering. You can outline it, add dots, or keep it casual. There’s no wrong way!
Test Your Card!
This is the best part. Hold the card upright and gently pull the string hanging below. Your little paper child should climb the ladder and place the crown right on Dad’s head. 🎉
If the string feels stiff, check that your holes are wide enough and that the foam tape has created enough of a gap. A small adjustment usually does the trick.
Pro Tips for a Perfect Card
Smooth sliding: Don’t tie the back knot too tight. The string loop needs a tiny bit of slack to slide easily. If it feels sticky, loosen the knot slightly.
Thicker paper = more durability: Drawing your figures on slightly thicker paper (or cardstock) means the child and crown hold their shape better when the card is used over and over.
Personalize the figures: Change hair color, add glasses, draw Dad’s favorite outfit – these little details are what make kids beam with pride when Dad opens it.
Write on the inside too: Use the inside of the card for a longer message, a hand-written poem, or a list of “10 Reasons You’re My King.”
