1. Crazy Eights

This classic is pure chaos in the best way possible! The eight card is wild, which means younger players have a fighting chance against their older siblings. It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s about to become a staple in your house.

Best for: Ages 5+, 2-5 players

Time to Play: 15-20 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal five cards to each player, one at a time.

2. Place the remaining cards face down in the center and flip the top card face up to start a discard pile.

3. Players take turns matching either the number or suit of the top card on the discard pile.

4. Here’s where it gets wild: An eight can be played on ANY card, and whoever plays it gets to choose the next suit that must be played!

5. If you can’t play a card, draw up to three cards from the deck (house rule: some families allow unlimited draws until you find a playable card).

6. First player to get rid of all their cards wins!

Pro Tip: Make it more exciting by adding special rules – like “play a two and the next player draws two cards” or “play a skip card (like a Queen) and the next player loses their turn!”

2. Snap

Get ready for lightning-fast reactions and bursts of laughter! This game is all about staying alert, which makes it perfect for burning off some of that kid energy while actually sitting still.

Best for: Ages 4+, 2+ players (great for larger groups!)

Time to Play: 10-15 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal all cards face down to each player – don’t worry if the piles aren’t perfectly even.

2. Players keep their cards in a face-down pile in front of them without looking.

3. Going clockwise, each player flips their top card onto a new face-up pile in front of them.

4. When two face-up piles show matching cards (two Jacks, two fives, etc.), the first person to yell “SNAP!” wins both matching piles and adds them to the bottom of their face-down pile.

5. If two players yell “Snap!” at the exact same time, combine both piles in the center as the “Snap Pot”. When a card matches the top of the Snap Pot, yell “Snap Pot!” to claim all those cards.

6. If you run out of face-down cards, flip your face-up pile over and keep playing!

Fun Variation: For younger kids, try “Slow-Mo Snap” where they have to touch the matching pile instead of yelling. It’s a gentler introduction to the game’s mechanics!

3. Old Maid

Nobody wants to be the Old Maid! This matching game teaches kids about pairs while keeping them on their toes trying to avoid getting stuck with the dreaded Queen.

Best for: Ages 4+, 2+ players

Time to Play: 10-20 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Remove one Queen from the deck (this creates the “Old Maid” since there will be three Queens and one won’t have a match).

2. Deal all remaining cards face down to players – uneven piles are totally fine.

3. Each player looks at their cards and pairs up any matches (two 7s, two Kings, etc.), placing pairs face down in front of them.

4. Player one fans their cards out face down toward player two, who draws one card blind.

5. If player two makes a match with the drawn card, they place that pair down. If not, they add it to their hand.

6. Continue clockwise, with each player drawing from the person on their right.

7. As players run out of cards, they’re safe and out of the game!

Pro Tip: The key strategy here is poker face! Younger kids will often wiggle the Old Maid card without meaning to, so remind them to mix up their cards between turns.

4. Spoons

Fair warning: This game gets intense! You’ll need to grab some plastic spoons from the kitchen, and then get ready for hilarious chaos as players scramble to grab a spoon when someone gets four of a kind.

Best for: Ages 6+, 3+ players

Time to Play: 10-15 minutes per round

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards
  • Plastic spoons (one fewer than the number of players – so 3 spoons for 4 players)

How to Play:

1. Place the spoons in the center of the table where everyone can reach them.

2. Deal four cards face down to each player.

3. Keep the remaining deck face down next to the dealer.

4. The dealer picks up the top card from the deck, decides whether to keep it or pass it, then slides one card face down to the player on their left.

5. Each player continues picking up the card passed to them and passing a different card to their left – keep the game moving quickly!

6. When a player collects four of a kind (four 8s, four Kings, etc.), they sneakily grab a spoon from the center.

7. Once one spoon is taken, everyone else can grab for the remaining spoons!

8. The player without a spoon gets a letter (first “S”, then “P”, and so on until they spell “SPOONS”).

9. When a player spells SPOONS, they’re out. Remove one spoon and keep playing!

Pro Tip: The real pros grab their four of a kind and wait a few seconds before casually reaching for a spoon. The delayed reaction creates maximum pandemonium!

5. Slapjack

This high-energy game is all about quick reflexes and the sweet satisfaction of slapping a pile of cards! Kids absolutely love the physical element of this one.

Best for: Ages 5+, 2+ players

Time to Play: 10-20 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal all cards face down evenly to all players.

2. Players keep their cards in a face-down pile without peeking.

3. Going clockwise, each player flips their top card face up into a center pile (flip away from yourself so you don’t see it before anyone else!).

4. Players continue taking turns flipping cards onto the center pile at a steady pace.

5. When a Jack appears, everyone races to slap the pile!

6. The first person to slap the Jack wins the entire center pile and shuffles it into their face-down cards.

7. If you slap a card that’s not a Jack, you have to give one card from your pile to the player who put down the last card.

8. When you run out of cards, you get one more chance – if a Jack appears and you slap it first, you’re back in the game!

Fun Variation: Add extra slap-worthy cards! For example, slap doubles (two 5s in a row) or “sandwiches” (a 5, then a 9, then another 5).

6. Go Fish

The ultimate classic! This gentle, easy-to-learn game is perfect for your youngest card players who are just learning numbers and matching. Plus, it teaches turn-taking and strategy in the sweetest way.

Best for: Ages 4+, 2+ players

Time to Play: 10-15 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal 5-7 cards to each player (5 for more players, 7 for fewer).

2. Place the remaining cards face down in the center as the “Fish Pond”.

3. Players look at their cards and make any initial matches of pairs or four of a kind, placing them face down.

4. On your turn, ask another specific player for a specific card: “Mom, do you have any sevens?”

5. You can only ask for a card you already have at least one of in your hand.

6. If they have any sevens, they must hand all of them over, and you get another turn.

7. If they don’t have any, they say “Go Fish!” and you draw one card from the Fish Pond.

8. If you draw the card you asked for, show it to everyone and take another turn!

9. When you collect four of a kind, place that set face up in front of you.

10. If you run out of cards, draw five new cards from the Fish Pond.

Pro Tip: For younger kids (ages 4-5), play for pairs instead of four of a kind to keep the game moving and less frustrating!

7. Pig

This silly game will have everyone giggling as they race to avoid becoming the “pig”! It’s fast-paced, requires zero strategy, and is perfect for kids who need a game they can jump right into.

Best for: Ages 5+, 3+ players

Time to Play: 5-10 minutes per round

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal four cards face down to each player.

2. The goal is to collect four of a kind as fast as possible.

3. Everyone simultaneously picks up one card and passes one card to their left, then picks up the new card that arrived on their right.

4. Keep passing and picking up cards as quickly as possible – this is a speed game!

5. As soon as one player gets four of a kind, they silently put their finger to their nose.

6. When other players notice, they must also put their finger to their nose immediately.

7. The last player to put their finger to their nose is the “Pig” and gets the letter “P”.

8. Keep playing rounds until someone spells P-I-G – they lose!

Fun Variation: Instead of touching your nose, try touching your ear, putting your hand on your head, or making a silly face. Switch it up each round to keep little ones on their toes!

8. War

Looking for a game your kids can play completely independently while you get stuff done? War is your answer! This classic battle of cards can keep two players entertained for ages with zero adult supervision needed.

Best for: Ages 5+, 2 players

Time to Play: 15-30 minutes (or until someone surrenders!)

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal all 52 cards evenly between two players, face down.

2. Players keep their cards face down in a pile – no peeking allowed!

3. Both players flip their top card over at the same time.

4. Whoever played the higher card (Aces are highest, twos are lowest) wins both cards and adds them face up to their pile.

5. When you reach your face-up cards, shuffle them and continue playing.

6. When both players flip over cards of the same value, it’s time for WAR!

7. During War, each player places three cards face down, then flips one card face up.

8. Whoever has the higher face-up card wins all 10 cards in the battle!

9. If the face-up War cards are also equal, repeat the War process until someone wins.

Pro Tip: Set a timer for 20 minutes and whoever has the most cards when time’s up wins. Otherwise, this game can go on forever – which is great for a long car ride, but not so much before dinner!

9. Speed

True to its name, this game moves at lightning pace! It’s perfect for competitive siblings who love a challenge and aren’t afraid of a little friendly rivalry.

Best for: Ages 7+, 2 players

Time to Play: 5-10 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal five cards face down to each player – these are your “hand” cards.

2. Deal 15 additional cards face down to each player as their “draw pile”.

3. In the middle, create four piles: 5 cards on the far left (face down), 1 card next to it (face down), 1 card next to that (face down), and 5 cards on the far right (face down).

4. Both players flip over the two single-card middle piles at the same time.

5. Players race to play cards from their hand that are one number higher or one number lower than the cards in the middle (a 6 can go on a 5 or 7).

6. You can play on either middle pile at any time – don’t wait for turns!

7. As you play cards, draw from your 15-card pile to keep 5 cards in your hand at all times.

8. If both players get stuck with no moves, count “1, 2, 3” together and flip the top card from each 5-card side pile onto the middle piles.

9. First player to get rid of all their cards yells “SPEED!” and wins!

Fun Variation: Make it even more chaotic by allowing Aces to count as either high or low (they can go on Kings or on twos).

10. I Doubt It

This game turns fibbing into an art form! Kids will love testing their bluffing skills and catching others in a lie. It’s sneaky, strategic, and absolutely hilarious.

Best for: Ages 6+, 3+ players

Time to Play: 15-20 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal all cards evenly to all players, face down.

2. Players look at their cards and keep them hidden.

3. The first player must play Aces, placing them face down in the center while announcing how many: “Two Aces”.

4. Here’s the twist: You must play at least one card, even if you don’t have the right card – that’s where the bluffing comes in!

5. Moving clockwise, the next player must play twos, then the next plays threes, and so on up through Kings, then back to Aces.

6. If someone thinks a player is lying about what they played, they call out “I Doubt It!”

7. Flip over the cards just played. If they were lying, they take the entire center pile. If they were telling the truth, the doubter takes the pile!

8. Whoever picks up the pile goes next, starting back with Aces.

Pro Tip: The best bluffers play some real cards mixed with fake ones. If you need to play three 7s but only have one, play your real 7 plus two random cards. It makes it much harder to tell if you’re bluffing!

11. Beggar My Neighbor (Chase the Ace)

This high-stakes game of luck and suspense will have everyone on the edge of their seats! It’s pure chance, which means even your youngest player could reign supreme.

Best for: Ages 5+, 3-8 players

Time to Play: 10-15 minutes

What You’ll Need:

  • One standard deck of cards

How to Play:

1. Deal all cards evenly to all players, face down.

2. Players fan out their cards and look at them.

3. The goal is simple: Don’t get stuck with the lowest card when the round ends!

4. Player one can either keep their card or swap it with the player on their left.

5. If you’re forced to swap, you must trade unless you have a King (Kings can’t be taken).

6. The dealer goes last but can choose to keep their card or “cut” by swapping with the top card of the remaining deck.

7. Everyone reveals their cards at the same time.

8. Whoever has the lowest card (Aces are low, Kings are high) loses the round and gets a strike.

9. Three strikes and you’re out!

Fun Variation: Play “Three Lives” instead – everyone starts with three poker chips, tokens, or pennies. Lose a life each time you have the lowest card. Last player with lives remaining wins!

The Bottom Line
