15-20 counting bears (or any small toys – dinosaurs, mini animals, whatever you’ve got!)
A flat surface (table or floor)

Pro Tip: Have extras on hand! There’s always one cup that mysteriously disappears right when you need it.

How to Run The Floor is Lava STEM Challenge
The Setup: Hook Them In!
Time: 5 minutes
Start by introducing the dramatic premise: The floor has turned into LAVA! All the little bears are in danger and need to be rescued.
The only way to save them? Build a structure that keeps them safely ABOVE the lava (table level).
If you want to really amp up the excitement, play this Floor is Lava song by The Kiboomers. Trust me – once kids hear it, they’re 100% bought in.
If working with a class: Break kids into teams of 2-3. At home with siblings? Perfect – teamwork starts now!
The Challenge Rules:
1. Use ONLY the materials given: 3 cups, 5 popsicle sticks, and bears
2. Bears must be ABOVE table level (no touching the lava!)
3. The structure must stand on its own (no holding allowed once time starts)
Part I: The First Rescue Mission

Time: 10 minutes
Hand out the supplies and start the timer. Now step back and watch the magic happen. You’ll see:
Kids stacking cups and testing stability
Serious discussions about which design will hold more bears
Triumphant moments when a wobbly tower suddenly stands strong
The occasional collapse (followed by determined rebuilding)
When time’s up: Have everyone freeze with hands in the air! Carefully remove and count the rescued bears.

Reflection Questions (This is where the REAL learning happens):
“What worked really well for your team?”

“Did you have any aha! moments where you figured something out?”
“If you could give advice to another team, what would you say?”

Now for the game-changer: Give each team ONE index card.

Start the timer again and let them redesign their structures with this new resource.
When time’s up: Freeze! Count bears again. Compare the two rounds.
Discussion:
“How did the index card change your design?”
“Did you rescue more bears this time? Why or why not?”
“What’s one thing you’d do differently if we played again?”

Part III (Optional): The Ultimate Challenge
Want to extend the fun? Offer one more supply:
- An additional cup
- A paper plate
- 3 more popsicle sticks
- Tape (this makes it MUCH easier – you decide if you want easy mode!)
