What Is the Gratitude Game?

Think Pick-Up Sticks – that classic game where you drop a bundle of sticks and take turns carefully pulling them out one by one without disturbing the pile. Now add a gratitude twist: every stick you pick up comes with a prompt. Each color represents a different category of things to be thankful for.

It’s a sneaky-genius way to get kids (and adults!) reflecting on their blessings while they’re busy concentrating on not knocking over the pile. The conversation just… happens naturally. And that’s the magic of it.

What You’ll Need

50 wooden craft sticks or dowels (10 of each color)

Paint in 5 colors: red, orange, green, blue, and purple

Paintbrushes

A flat surface to play on

A note on paint: Watercolor paint works fine but will need two coats to show up bright enough. For more vibrant colors, go with acrylic or tempera paint – it covers in one coat and the colors really pop.

How to Make Your Gratitude Sticks

1. Lay out your craft sticks and divide them into 5 groups of 10.

2. Paint each group a different color: red, orange, green, blue, and purple.

3. Let them dry completely. If using watercolor, apply a second coat once the first is dry.

4. That’s it – you’re ready to play!

Pro Tip: Make painting the sticks part of the activity! Kids love being hands-on in the setup, and it builds excitement for the game before you’ve even played a single round. Lay out newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to keep the mess contained.

The Color Key: What Each Stick Means

Before you start, make sure everyone knows what each color represents. Write it on a card and set it in the middle of the table so no one forgets mid-game:

Red: Name a person you are thankful for

Orange: Name a place you are thankful for

Green: Name a food you are thankful for

Blue: Name a thing you are thankful for

Purple: Free choice – name anything you’re grateful for!

Feel free to swap out categories to fit your family. You could use “a memory you love,” “something in nature,” or “a skill you’re proud of.” Make it yours!

How to Play

1. Gather all 50 sticks into one bundle and hold them upright in your hand, tips touching the table.

2. Drop them! Let the sticks fall and scatter naturally. That random pile is your playing field.

3. The youngest player goes first. On your turn, carefully pull one stick from the pile without making any other stick move.

4. If you successfully remove a stick without disturbing the pile, check the color – then share your gratitude answer out loud before you keep the stick.

5. If another stick moves during your turn, your turn ends and you do not collect that stick. Pass to the next player.

6. Continue taking turns until all the sticks have been collected.

7. The player with the most sticks at the end wins!

Best for: Families, classrooms, ages 5 and up

Players: 2–6

Time to Play: 15–25 minutes

Why This Game Works So Well

Here’s what makes this more than just a game: kids are so focused on pulling the stick carefully that the gratitude prompt sneaks right past any resistance. Instead of sitting around a table being asked “what are you thankful for?” (cue the blank stares), they’re engaged, competitive, and genuinely thinking. You’ll be amazed at the answers that come out.

I’ve seen kids pause mid-game to say things like “I’m thankful for our dog because she always makes me feel better when I’m sad” – totally unprompted and totally heartfelt. That’s the kind of moment this game creates.

Fun Variations to Try

M&M Gratitude Game: Skip the sticks entirely and use a bag of M&Ms instead! Each player grabs a handful and shares one gratitude answer for every M&M they picked up, based on the color. Red = a person, orange = a happy memory, yellow = something in nature, green = a place you love, blue = a food, brown = free choice. Then everyone gets to eat their stash. It’s a huge hit at Thanksgiving dinner tables and classroom parties alike.

Skittles Version: Same idea as the M&M version but with Skittles – great for kids with chocolate allergies or just for a fruity twist.

Team Play: Split into two teams. Each team has to collectively answer the gratitude prompt before the stick is awarded. Great for classrooms!

Perfect for Classrooms Too

Teachers – this one’s for you. The Gratitude Game is a wonderful addition to a Thanksgiving unit, a social-emotional learning activity, or even just a Friday afternoon wind-down. It sparks genuine reflection, gets kids listening to each other, and takes almost zero prep. Print out the color key, grab some craft sticks, and you’re set.

With this game in your back pocket, you’ve got an activity that teaches something meaningful while keeping everyone genuinely entertained. And honestly? That’s the best kind of game there is.
